Create a carpet of the most intense, breathtaking colour with Lithodora diffusa 'Heavenly Blue' (Purple Gromwell). This outstanding evergreen alpine forms a dense, low-growing mat of dark green, slightly hairy foliage that is absolutely smothered in brilliant, gentian-blue, star-shaped flowers from late spring into summer. It is an exceptional choice for bringing vivid, vibrant ground cover to rockeries, gravel gardens, or spilling dramatically over the edges of raised beds and retaining walls.

  • Supplied As: 1 x 9cm pot
  • Eventual Height: 15cm - 20cm
  • Eventual Spread: 50cm - 60cm
  • Position: Full sun
  • Soil Preference: Well-drained, acidic (ericaceous)
  • RHS Hardiness: H5 (Hardy in most places throughout the UK)
  • Flowering Period: May - July

Bedwen Plants Care Tip: Lithodora is a lime-hating plant and must be grown in acidic (ericaceous) soil to truly thrive; if your garden soil is alkaline, it will grow perfectly in a container filled with ericaceous compost. To maintain a neat, compact habit, give the plant a light trim with shears immediately after flowering, taking care not to cut back into the old, woody stems.

Plant Care

What are you buying?

4L, 2L & 1L refer to pot volume in litres. 9cm, 7cm & 5cm refer to pot diameter. These are common terms used in plant retail to indicate the size of a plant root system. Leaf & stem growth on plants varies widely by variety and time of year. Usually, 1L/2L/4L plants can be anywhere between 20-60cm tall & 5/7/9cm plants will be around 10-30cm tall. However, this may be less if the plant is naturally low growing or if it is a herbaceous plant in winter.

Plug plants are small plants grown from seeds or cuttings in cell trays. Their root systems start from about 1cm and the largest plug plants, described as extra-large or jumbo, are usually around 4cm. Plug plants can be great value to buy but they will need some extra care to get them started. We recommend planting each plug plant into its own 7 or 9cm pot (about the size of a standard mug), NOT directly into open ground or large pots. Ensure the pot has plenty of holes underneath and preferably over two tiers for even better drainage.
