Delphinium

How to grow... Delphiniums
Delphiniums are known for their tall, striking spikes of colourful flowers, making them a favourite among gardeners for adding height and drama to borders and flower beds. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you grow antirrhinums successfully:
Location: Choose a sunny spot with fertile, well-draining soil. Delphiniums prefer slightly alkaline soil.
Soil: They prefer fertile, well-draining soil with a slightly alkaline pH. Adding organic matter such as compost can improve soil fertility and drainage.
Spacing: Space plants 30-60 cm (12-24 inches) apart, depending on the variety.
Watering: Delphiniums need consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. However, they do not like waterlogged soil, which can lead to root rot.
Staking: Tall delphiniums often need staking to support their flower spikes. Use bamboo canes or metal supports and tie the stems gently to the stakes.
Deadheading: Removing spent flower spikes can encourage a second flush of blooms. Cut back the flower stalks to the base after the flowers have faded.
Powdery Mildew: This fungal disease can affect delphiniums, especially in humid conditions. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk.
Companion Planting: Delphiniums look stunning when paired with roses, peonies, and other perennials.
