How to grow Creeping Phlox

Phlox subulata, commonly known as creeping phlox or moss phlox, is a low-growing perennial plant known for its colorful flowers and ability to spread and cascade over rock walls, slopes, and garden beds. Here are some tips for successfully growing Creeping Phlox in your garden:

  1. Location: Choose a sunny location for planting. Phlox subulata thrives in full sun and needs direct sunlight to produce the best flower display.

  2. Soil: Provide well-draining soil with good aeration. Amending the soil with compost before planting can improve soil structure and fertility.

  3. Spacing: When planting Phlox subulata, space the plants according to the specific variety. Generally, spacing of about 12 to 18 inches is recommended, as they will spread and fill in over time.

  4. Watering: Water the plants moderately during their establishment period. Once established, they prefer consistent moisture but not waterlogged conditions. Water them when the top inch of soil feels dry.

  5. Mulching: Apply a thin layer of mulch around the base of the plants to help retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds. Avoid covering the entire plant with mulch.

  6. Fertilising: Phlox subulata doesn't require heavy fertilizsation. A light application of a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring can provide necessary nutrients for growth and flowering.

  7. Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flower heads to encourage continuous blooming and maintain a neat appearance.

  8. Trimming: After the main blooming period, you can trim back the plants lightly to encourage new growth and possibly trigger reblooming later in the season.

  9. Overwintering: In most cases, Phlox subulata should survive the winter without extensive intervention. However, if you're in an area that experiences extremely harsh winters or if your plants are newly planted, providing a bit of extra protection through mulching can be beneficial.

Phlox subulata's cascading growth habit and vibrant flowers make it a fantastic choice for rock gardens, borders, and ground cover plantings. As always, consider local conditions when choosing a variety of Creeping Phlox.
