Ignite the dry, sunny spaces in your garden with Helianthemum 'Fire Dragon' (Rock Rose). This vigorous, low-growing evergreen shrub forms a dense carpet of grey-green foliage that bursts into a blaze of fiery, flame-red flowers with vivid orange centres from late spring. Highly drought-tolerant and delightfully easy to grow, it is a magnificent choice for bringing intense colour to gravel gardens, sunny rockeries, or cascading over the edges of raised beds.

Plant Specifications:

  • Plant Type: Evergreen Shrub / Alpine
  • Eventual Height: 15cm - 25cm
  • Eventual Spread: 40cm - 50cm
  • Position: Full sun
  • Soil Preference: Well-drained (thrives in poor, sandy, or chalky soils)
  • RHS Hardiness: H4 (Hardy through most of the UK)
  • Flowering Period: May - July

Bedwen Plants Care Tip: Rock roses must have excellent drainage and will not tolerate winter waterlogging. To maintain a tight, compact shape and promote fresh foliage growth, give the plant a light shear immediately after the summer blooms fade, taking care not to cut back into the old, woody stems.

Plant Care

What are you buying?

4L, 2L & 1L refer to pot volume in litres. 9cm, 7cm & 5cm refer to pot diameter. These are common terms used in plant retail to indicate the size of a plant root system. Leaf & stem growth on plants varies widely by variety and time of year. Usually, 1L/2L/4L plants can be anywhere between 20-60cm tall & 5/7/9cm plants will be around 10-30cm tall. However, this may be less if the plant is naturally low growing or if it is a herbaceous plant in winter.

Plug plants are small plants grown from seeds or cuttings in cell trays. Their root systems start from about 1cm and the largest plug plants, described as extra-large or jumbo, are usually around 4cm. Plug plants can be great value to buy but they will need some extra care to get them started. We recommend planting each plug plant into its own 7 or 9cm pot (about the size of a standard mug), NOT directly into open ground or large pots. Ensure the pot has plenty of holes underneath and preferably over two tiers for even better drainage.
